Overview

This album is a tribute to László Réber, a renowned Hungarian draughtsman, caricaturist, animation film-maker, artist, and illustrator. The album features accounts of memories and thoughts on Réber by Gábor Görgey, Marcell Jankovics, Ottó Merei, András Székely, and Tibor Wehner, as well as a postscript by his daughter, Krisztina Widengård. The album is designed by István Molnár and was published with the support of the Ministry of Heritage and the National Cultural Fund of Hungary.

László Réber was known for his simple yet expressive drawings, which often conveyed a gentle humor. He was a pioneer in Hungarian animation film and worked for the satirical weekly Ludas Matyi. His drawings were published with English and German captions, and the books he illustrated were translated into many languages.

From Backside:

LÁSZLÓ RÉBER's name has been linked to the name of a popular writer for generations. In the course of time hundreds of thousands or even millions have grown fond of the young boy who looks up to adults dutifully yet seems to observe them from above, and just as many people have learnt that they should appreciate the grown-ups dull words of wisdom, platitudes, aggressive intrusions into their development and attempts to put an end to the eternal frankness of childhood. But the well-known boy in shorts of Eva Janikovszky's books was only a small part of the career of László Réber, who died at the age of 81. He was a draughtsman who, with very simple lines, expressed everything that others need colours, shades and forms fine. A kind of humour always showed through his drawings that made one smile gently. The title of a book of the once widely pop ular Chinese writer could be used to describe it: A Wise Smile. There was a time when these drawings came to lức. In the epic days of Hungarian animation film László Réber became one of the pioneers. He worked for the satirical weekly Ludas Matyi that was revamped after 156, and he was one of the first to publish a album of caricatures in the heyday of the gente in Europe. These drawings were also published with English and German captions, and the books he illustrated were translated into many languages. He lived and worked low profile for "high" culture, and was the kind of person who is seldom sought out by official - as opposed to professional - awards and medals. In this anthology Gábor Görgey. Marcell Jankovics. Ottó Merei, András Székely and Tibor Wehner have written accounts of their memories and thoughts on László Réber, describing the per yon, the caricaturist, the animation film-maker, the artist and the illustrator. The postscript is by his daughter, Krisztina Widengård. István Molnár has designed a hook fitting to the subject.
