Nothing is quite so Fellini-esque in the films of Federico Fellini as the music by Nino Rota, who in 1966 drew upon previous works for a ballet based on "La Strada," Fellini's most honored film. The score was a commission from the La Scala opera house, and its artistic director now conducts a 28-minute suite that hauntingly translates the tale. Luchino Visconti's masterpiece, "The Leopard," concludes with a nearly hourlong ball sequence at which an aged aristocrat confronts his life and the social changes that have swirled about it. Here Rota created music in the style of an unpublished waltz by Giuseppe Verdi, which begins a set of dances that in 17 minutes conveys the ache of lost time as concisely as can be imagined. Muti's performances have a refinement that outclasses Domenico Savino's on the "Leopard" soundtrack. The more serious Concerto for Strings--four movements, 15 minutes--is an elegant filler, seductively played and recorded. -- By Alan G. Artner
