György Kurtág (Hungarian: [ˈɟørɟ ˈkurtaːɡ]; born 19 February 1926) is a Hungarian classical composer and pianist. He was an academic teacher of piano at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music from 1967, later also of chamber music, and taught until 1993.

Beginning in the late 1980s, Kurtág wrote several works in which the spatial distribution of instruments plays an important role. His composition, … quasi una fantasia… for piano and ensemble, premiered in 1988, is the first piece in which he explores the idea of music that spatially embraces the audience.

Kurtág often held master classes in chamber music, and appeared in concerts together with his wife Márta. The couple played an always-renewing selection of pieces for two- and four-hand piano from Kurtág's nine-volume collection Játékok as well as transcriptions.

Most of Kurtág's music is published by Editio Musica Budapest, some by Universal Edition, Vienna, and some by Boosey & Hawkes, London.

Kurtág György (Lugos, Románia, 1926. február 19. –) kétszeres Kossuth-díjas magyar zeneszerző, zongoraművész és kamarazene-tanár.

A nemzetközi hírnevet az 1981-ben bemutatott A boldogult R. V. Truszova üzenetei című kamarazenekar-kíséretes, orosz nyelvű dalciklusa hozta meg számára. Ezt követően az 1980-as években a közép-európai zenei örökség új aktualitását teremtette meg.

Legismertebb alkotásai között tartják számon az 1973–1976 között komponált Játékok zongorára című sorozatot. A négy füzetben található darabok a Mikrokozmoszhoz hasonlóan, a zongorán tanuló növendékeket egyre nagyobb technikai nehézségek elé állítják.

2009-ben mutatták be az amerikai magyar kulturális évadra komponált új művét, Anna Ahmatova verseire írt dalciklusát. Ekkor adta elő feleségével közösen a washingtoni Kongresszusi Könyvtár felkérésére írt, Bartók előtt tisztelgő másik új művét is.
