Two years after he completed the organ mass, Kodaly recast it for full orchestra and mixed choir. An excellent recording of this more forceful second version, under the composer's baton, is included in a new boxed set, ''Kodaly Conducts Kodaly'' (SLPX 12410-12, three disks). The five works in this collection afford a good overview of Kodaly's orchestral efforts -and of the consistency of his compositional vision: The early symphonic poem, ''Summer Evening'' (1906), is all sweetly Romantic lyricism, with a slight yet palpable Hungarian accent; the Concerto for Orchestra (1939-40) is more rhythmically emphatic, but very much of the same harmonic mold. Also included here are two large choral works central to the Kodaly canon - the ''Palmus Hungaricus'' (1923), one of his first internationally successful scores, and the ''Te Deum of Buda Castle'' (1939). The recordings, made between 1956 and 1960, are well-produced and crispsounding, and show Kodaly to have been a commanding and dramatic interpreter.
