English Summary:

Paris, January 1942. France is occupied by the Nazis. Robert Klein, apparently apolitical, is a well-to-do art dealer, Roman Catholic and Alsatian by birth, who takes advantage of French Jews who need to sell artworks to raise cash to leave the country. One day, the local Jewish newspaper, addressed to him, is delivered to his home. He learns that another Robert Klein who has been living in Paris, a Jew sought by the police, has had his mail forwarded to him in an apparent attempt to destroy his social reputation and make him a target of official anti-Semitism. He reports this to the police who remain suspicious that he may be reporting this scheme to disguise his own true identity. His own investigations lead him in contradictory directions, to Klein who lives in a slum while having an affair with his concierge and to Klein who visits a palatial country estate where he has seduced an apparently Jewish married woman. When the art dealer cannot locate the other Klein, authorities require him to offer proof of his French non-Jewish ancestry. While waiting for the documentation to arrive, he struggles to track down his namesake and learn his motivation. Before he can resolve the situation by either means, he is caught up in the July 1942 roundup of Parisian Jews. He is reunited with Jews who once were his clients as they board boxcars for Auschwitz.

Monsieur Klein est un film français sorti en 1976. Il est réalisé par le cinéaste américain Joseph Losey et produit par Alain Delon qui en est l'acteur principal.

En 1942 à Paris, sous l'occupation allemande, l'Alsacien Robert Klein fait des affaires, notamment en rachetant à vil prix des objets d'art à des Juifs en difficulté. Alors qu'il reconduit à la porte l'un d'eux à qui il vient d'acheter un petit tableau du maître néerlandais Adriaen van Ostade, il découvre parmi son courrier un exemplaire des Informations juives, journal habituellement distribué sur abonnement spécial.

L'affairiste se rend compte alors qu'il existe un autre Robert Klein, homonyme, abonné au journal parce que Juif et fiché comme tel à la préfecture de police. Désormais, son patronyme prend des consonances suspectes et en fait un « gibier ». Pris dans un piège kafkaïen, cherchant à se blanchir, il ne fait qu'augmenter la suspicion des autorités vichystes à son égard. Il découvre que son double est non seulement juif, mais aussi résistant, et qu'il joue de son homonymie pour mener des activités clandestines. Finalement muni de faux papiers, le Klein-affairiste cherchera à fuir avant d'y renoncer, tenaillé par le besoin de connaître celui dont il est la victime.

Dénoncé par l'avocat du Klein-affairiste au moment même de leur rencontre enfin possible, le Klein-juif et résistant est arrêté. À l'instar de son double, l'autre Klein est arrêté à son tour le lendemain, lors de la rafle du Vél d'Hiv du 16 juillet 1942. Malgré l'attestation in extremis prouvant qu'il n'est pas juif, la présence de son homonyme dans le convoi déporté vers l'Allemagne le pousse à tenter de lui parler : entraînés par le destin, ils finissent tous deux déportés sans avoir réussi à s'être jamais rencontrés. Comme un reflet de sa mauvaise conscience, l'affairiste se retrouve dans le même wagon que son client juif avec lequel tout avait commencé.

Robert Klein műkereskedő, akiben sok-sok egyéni élettapasztalat sűrűsödik össze. A zsidóüldözések kezdetétől szép hasznot húz a zsidók nyomorúságából, amikor olcsón felvásárolja javaikat. Egyszer azonban összetévesztik egy azonos nevű zsidóval. A titokzatos hasonmás kutatása közben szembesül önmaga legbenső énjével, és e kalandos lelki út végén tudatosan vállalja a sorsközösséget az üldözöttekkel.
