Overview

"King Ralph" is a 1991 comedy film directed by David S. Ward. The story begins with a freak accident that kills the entire British royal family during a photo session outside Buckingham Palace, when electrified rain affects the lights. In the aftermath, Sir Cedric Willingham is tasked with finding a surviving heir to the throne.

After extensive research, Cedric's team discovers that there is indeed a living heir: an American named Ralph Jones, played by John Goodman. Ralph, recently fired from his job as a lounge singer in Las Vegas, learns from Duncan Phipps, Cedric's assistant, that his grandmother Constance had an affair with the first Duke of Warren, making Ralph a legitimate heir to the British throne.

Flown to London, Ralph undergoes a crash course in royal etiquette. On just his second day as king, he visits a strip club and meets Miranda Greene, portrayed by Peter O'Toole, who is an exotic dancer and aspiring fashion designer. When Ralph dares her to date him if the British press validates his claim to the monarchy, a series of humorous events ensue.

Opposition arises from Lord Percival Graves, who wants to replace the House of Wyndham with his own House of Stuart, opposing an American on the throne. As tensions rise, Miranda is bribed by Graves to create a scandal involving Ralph. Despite warnings, Ralph sneaks out for a romantic date with Miranda at Hyde Park, leading to complications that threaten his royal status.
