Zawinul points the camera to a shelf below his studio ceiling lined with small figurines, which, he says, "represent my music influences, the row where for me world music comes from." After noting a dozen representations of Africans in traditional dress, each holding a different indigenous folkloric instrument, Zawinul points to a photograph of "the door of no return" on Goree Island in Senegal, and then to models of two slave ships. The camera pans left to a nine-piece band, in dark suits and red bowties, blowing saxophones and brass; jump-cuts to a trio of Africans in modern Western attire, playing electric guitar, keyboard and trap drums; and cuts again to two congueros and a saxophonist playing for dancers in front of model coaches painted in tropical colors. In the course of his 75 years, Zawinul assimilated and placed his stamp on Afrodiasporic streams. He was 72 during the filming at his Malibu, Calif., home and various locations in Vienna. He seems determined to hold nothing back, and allows Kidel to pinpoint and nuance the intersections between his artistic production and his life. The performance footage is superb, illuminating Zawinul's virtuosity and deft, unobtrusive orchestration.
