A történelem egyik legnagyobb jelentőségű személyisége és minden idők egyik legnagyobb hadvezére, Julius Caesar életét már sokan vetették papírra és több rendező is forgatott belőle filmet. Az eddigi változatok közül Joseph L. Mankiewicz (Philadelphiai történet, Egy levél három asszonynak, Minden Éváról, Kelopátra) 1953-as, Shakespeare Julius Caesar című drámája alapján készített látványos klaszikusa számít a legidőtállóbbnak, olyan alkotásnak, amelyet még bő fél évszázad elteltével is érdemes végignézni, hiszen olyan kiválóságok szerepelnek benne, mint a nemrég elhunyt Marlon Brando, John Gielgud vagy James Mason. Krisztus előtt 44-ben járunk, amikor a világ urát, Julius Caesar (Louis Calhern) immár negyedszer választják konzullá Rómában. A hatalma teljében lévő államférfi újbóli uralma azonban nem mindenki számára jelent örömöt. Caesar uralkodása ugyanis az egész birodalmat megosztja. Az elégedetlenkedők közül a leghangosabb, Cassius (John Gielgud) és Caesar fogadott fia, Brutus (James Mason) azonban nem elégszenek meg azzal, hogy szóval mondjanak ellent a konzulnak: összeesküvést szőnek Caesar ellen, és még attól sem riadnak vissza, hogy ha kell, megöljék vezetőjüket.
