English Description:

Johann Sebastian Bach in 1717 the conductor at the court of Cothen, celebrated his 32nd birthday. His employer, Prince Leopold, was nine years his junior and a trained musician. The Prince was an excellent violinist, gamba player, harpsichordist, and singer. Bach paid him the greatest tribute saying: "The Prince not only loves music, but knows and understands it." The six years that Bach spent in this post (which is known as his third creative period), saw the composition primarily of his works for harpsichord and clavichord. The church cantatas and organ compositions that were so characteristic of his earlier periods are here almost entirely absent. This has a simple explanation: the court was Calvinist, to which Bach the staunch Lutheran, could not have contributed. No one expected the Court Conductor to compose religious works or play the organ. Instead he was encouraged to produce ever more pieces of instrumental music.

During his Cöthen years, Bach was by inclination and conviction, a teacher. Keyboard instruments were particularly suitable for pedagogical purposes, and it comes as no surprise to learn that many of the works he wrote were published in his lifetime. Later generations knew Bach as principally a keyboard composer.

Jobann Sebastian Bach ezerhétszáztizenhétben, harminckét évesen lett a kötheni udvar karmestere. Munkaadója a kilenc évvel fiatalabb Leopold herceg maga is képzett zenész volt. Kiválóan játszott hegedűn, gambán, csembalón, sőt énekelt is. Bach a legnagyobb elismeréssel mondta róla: "A fejedelem nemcsak szereti a zenét, hanem érti és tudja is".

A nála eltöltött hat év, (alkotóművészetének úgynevezett harmadik periódusa), a kamaraművek, mindenekelőtt a csembalóra és clavichordra írott művek keletkezési évei voltak. A korábbi időszakokra oly jellemző egyházi kantáták és orgonakompozíciók szinte teljesen hiányoznak, aminek egyszerű magyarázata a hercegi udvar kálvinista vallása, amelyhez a rendíthetetlen lutheránus Bach nem járulhatott hozzá. De nem is várta el senki az Udvari Karmester Úrtól, hogy egyházi műveket komponáljon vagy orgonán játsszék. A hangszeres zene területén viszont újabb és újabb darabok alkotására ösztönözték.

A kötheni évek Bachja hajlam és elhivatottság szerint elsősorban tanár volt. A billentyűs hangszerek különösen alkalmasak voltak tanításra, nem csoda hogy az ezekre írt darabok már életében is kiadásra kerültek. Az utána jövő generációk, mint "clavier" komponistát ismerték legjobban.
