The Revolt of Job (Hungarian: Jób lázadása) is a 1983 Hungarian film directed by Imre Gyöngyössy and Barna Kabay. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Lackó is a Hungarian orphan whom a Jewish couple adopts. He lives with the family until the Nazis take the parents away.

Hungary, 1943. An elderly Jewish couple, Jób and Róza, adopt an unruly non-Jewish child (Lackó) to whom they intend to pass on their wealth and knowledge before Nazi oppression engulfs Hungary.

Attending the film's opening in New York City, Gyöngyössy said that he intended the movie "as a message not only between generations but between nations".

Hungarian Summary:  A film gondolati alaptémájául Jób könyve szolgál. Azé a Jóbé, aki a Szentírás szerint „istenfélő igaz emberként boldogságban és gazdagságban él, de váratlanul és vétlenül balsors tör rá: élete válságba kerül.” Próbatételei végén Jób megérti és elfogadja Isten hatalmasságát. Átvitt értelemben a terheket méltósággal, szerénységgel viselő ember példaképe Jób alakja. Gyöngyössy Imre filmje a második világháború megrázó és kényes időszakáról szól. Az idősödő, zsidó Jób, feleségével, Rózával, egy Tisza mentén található meg nem nevezett kis magyar faluban élnek az 1940-es évek elején. A történet sorsszerűsége, hogy hét gyermeküket korán elvesztették, ezért a család örökös nélkül maradt. 1943-ban cseles jogi manőverekkel - és persze nem kevés pénzért -, örökbe fogadják az árva, katolikus neveltetésű Lackót. Kvázi örököst vásárolnak maguknak. Jób és a felesége úgy akarnak tekinteni a fiúra, mint a saját gyermekükre. A férfi elkezdi tanítani Lackót, érintőlegesen megismerteti a Talmuddal, az evilági bölcsességgel és a zsidó vallással. A kezdeti konfliktusok után kiderül, hogy az árva Lackó nagyon eszes, fogékony és életrevaló gyermek. A fasizmus felhői viszont gyülekeznek és rövidesen elérik a tiszamenti kis falut is. Egy nap Jóbot és Rózát koncentrációs táborba hurcolják. Mielőtt ez megtörténik, sorsuk és végzetük teljes tudatában Lackót és elrejtett javaikat korábbi cselédeikre bízzák azzal az ígérettel, hogy azok gondját viselik a gyermeknek, míg felnő.

"Originally titled Job Lazadasa, the German-Hungarian The Revolt of Job is set in Nazi-occupied Eastern Hungary in 1943. Like his Biblical namesake, the elderly Job (Ferenc Zenthe) has had his strength and patience sorely tested. None of the children borne by Job's wife Roza (Hedi Temesay) have survived to adulthood. In a last-ditch effort to preserve his name, Job unofficially adopts a 7-year-old boy (Gabor Fehrer). It takes a while for the boy and his new "parents" to get used to each other, but eventually a strong, solid bond is formed. But while the bond cannot be broken spiritually, it can be severed physically: Job and his wife are Jewish, thus it is only a matter of time before the Nazis cart them off to death camps. Just before bidding farewell to his foster son, Job advises the boy to keep his faith alive by searching for the true Messiah. VIEWER COMMENT : "To test Job, God took away everything he had, but still Job refused to curse God and die. "The Revolt of Job" ("Jrb lázadása") is a 1983 Hungarian film from director Imre Gyongyossy that tells of a Jewish couple (Ferenc Zenthe and Hedy Temessy) whose children have all died and so they adopt a Christian child (Gabor Feher) so they can pass on their heritage. But of course, even if they do not realize it from the very start, the viewer certainly knows that their hopes are literally going to be turned to ashes. This is a relatively quiet film, leisurely paced, and filmed against beautiful scenery, all of which serves to heightens the final tragedy.
