The protagonist, Tenzin Gyatso, the fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet says, “I love smiles and laughter. If one wants more smiles in one’s life, one must create the right conditions for it. There are many different kinds of smiles. Some smiles which are diplomatic or sarcastic create an unpleasant atmosphere and give rise to suspicion whereas a genuine smile gives us a great deal of satisfaction. So how does one achieve that? Certainly not through anger, jealousy, extreme greed or hatred, but through loving kindness, an open mind and sincerity.” The film is the journey of Tenzin Gyatso who lost his freedom at the age of fifteen and his own country at the age of twenty-four. All these years he lived in exile as a refugee. News from his homeland was always saddening. He, however, always seems to be at peace. To overcome suffering is the perennial quest of mankind. Ez az egyedülálló film Tenzin Gyatso, Őszentsége a XIV. Dalai Láma életútját kíséri végig. Tibet vallási vezetője hazáját 24 évesen, 1959-ben hagyta el. Azóta száműzetésben él, harcolva a béke és a szeretet eszközeivel Tibet függetlenségéért és az emberek szabadságáért. A rendező megpróbálta bemutatni a Dalai Láma küzdelmes életét, egyben megragadni az ő bölcsességét, átadni tapasztalatait és üzenetét a világnak.
