Edgar Meyer (1960/11/24-) is one of the most accomplished double bassists on the scene today. He is also a composer, arranger, chamber musician, and plays piano, mandolin, and even the ancient cello.

His musical style spans classical, grassroots, folk and jazz. Influenced by his father, he began studying double bass at the age of five and continued his education at Indiana University. Known for his difficult, virtuosic playing, Meyer's recording of the bass version of Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello was a sensation. He has also written a number of groundbreaking compositions in the classical style. His wide-ranging interests have led him to collaborate with many superb musicians. In 1994 he became the first double bassist to win the Fisher Prize, the MacArthur Award and three Grammy Awards for his presentation of the instrument as a modern and versatile instrument.

The double bass is the largest instrument in the string family, with the lowest range, because of its special sound, it is difficult to show off tonal variations or techniques like the violin or cello, for Elgar Meyer, virtuosity is not the only thing that counts. Whether the bass is plucked or played in his hands, it is as if it is alive and singing with ease, showing the special sound variations and beauty of this instrument. When the double bass is played quickly, the notes change rapidly with a huge sense of energy, moving the listener. All kinds of slight body movements and breathing sounds are clear and vivid. If you have a good stereo, you can feel the beauty of the warm, intense, and real sound on this album. The living, breathing physicality of the bass alone is unmatched by any other recording, as if one could directly feel the fascinatingly realistic texture of the bow strings rubbing together, the long melodic lines and the occasional reverberation, etc., all of which are of the highest caliber of instrumental recordings.
