Born in 1924 in Budapest, Hungary, to a Jewish family, Stark began to study cello at the age of six and later entered the Liszt Conservatory. After the end of the Second World War, at the age of twenty, Stark became the principal cellist of the Hungarian National Opera and the Budapest Philharmonic, and left Hungary in 1946 due to political reasons, and moved to the United States from Vienna and Paris. After settling in the United States, Stark became principal cellist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, then principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and was active in the development of his solo career, as well as in teaching at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. He is also a highly successful teacher.
Stark's artistic career spans more than 60 years, and since the 1960s Stark has been recognized as one of the world's leading cellists. Stark's virtuosic approach is characterized by a quest for rustic, robust playing. He has reworked six of Bach's unaccompanied suites, emphasizing the rough, robust expression. His performance of the Kodály's Sonata is a masterpiece in its technical difficulties. This impeccable technique, which even led many critics to criticize him when it was published in the 1950s for not using recording techniques to fix mistakes in between recordings, is in fact a true reflection of his consummate technique, which is not tampered with in any way by recording techniques. As a young man, Stark was frustrated by the "lack of depth" in the reviews of his world-class technique. Today, however, his formal but brisk, considered phrasing, and his ever-changing expressions are always at his fingertips and at ease. His seriousness about the score is also more understandable to the world. His recordings are very numerous and are highly appreciated by collectors for their clear sound quality and high fidelity balance. The "immersive" quality of this recording, as the New York Times described it, "is like listening to the music live," and it will leave a lasting impression on music lovers about the music being played and the sound of the concert hall.
