These scenes from Gounod's Mireille and Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande are a testament to the high quality of television programming offered by Radio-Canada, Montreal, in the 1950s. Its variety arts series Heure du concert ("The Concert Hour") presented world-class artists in every area of the performing arts, with live productions of French operas (sometimes in their entirety, sometimes in excerpts) a particular specialty.
These scenes from the opera Mireille, by Gounod, and Pelléas et Mélisande, by Debussy, testify to the high quality of television programming offered by Radio-Canada in Montreal in the 1950s. The variety show L'Heure du concert featured world-renowned artists in all disciplines of the performing arts, but specialized in productions of complete French operas or selected excerpts.
