Overview

Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, his final opera, is one of the most spectacular works in the operatic canon. This 2013 live performance from the China National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing showcases a culturally immersive interpretation of the opera. Conducted by Daniel Oren, this production features a newly composed finale by Chinese composer Hao Weiya, following Puccini’s untimely death before completing the work. The blend of Puccini’s Italian opera with the Chinese musical and cultural influences that inspired him creates an unforgettable performance.

Directed by Chen Xinyi and featuring a superb cast, this production brings Puccini’s score to life with original Chinese melodies and pentatonic scales, paying homage to both Italian opera traditions and Asian music. The lavish staging and vivid orchestration, coupled with the final act's new music, offer a unique cultural fusion.
