His early ambition to serve as a missionary led him to study medicine. He trained under several esteemed doctors and graduated with an M.D. from St. Andrews University around 1861. At the age of seventeen, Thomas began to preach in the Wesleyan Reform before being introduced to the Brethren (presumably thru Taylor and Broomhall). He began to study medicine with the intent of joining them in China. He was apprenticed to doctors in Hull and Banbury, and afterwards studied at Edinburgh University and St. Bartholomew's Hospital. He graduated M.D. at St. Andrews University about 1861.

The following papers are from Notes of Addresses given by Dr. Neatby at Conference and other meetings in various places in Scotland. Though the subjects are different, yet, being all of a kindred nature, there are numerous repetitions; but it has been thought better to give the Addresses as delivered, so as to retain, as far as possible, their freshness, interest, and edification. In much of the present-day prophetic teaching there is evidence of careful study and critical acumen, and much is hazarded by way of interpretation as to the course of future events, but too often there is a felt absence of a personal Christ for the heart to rest in and wait for. It is this that makes these Addresses so precious and practical, that throughout each it is the adorable Person of the Lord Jesus that is kept steadily in view.. It has been a pleasure and profit to go over the notes and proofs for publication, and may a like blessing be experienced by every reader.
