The most important milestone on this path from tradition to restoration, from the fulfilment of liturgical requirements to emancipated artistic pretensiont is the Missa solemnis in A flat major (D678), begun in November 1819. This work, a chonal mutss par excellence, owed its origins to no outward stimule; in almost every respect its design abandons the conventional formal world of Schuberts four early mase.
