Overview
Renowned Russian director Alexander Sokurov, best known for works like Russian Ark, presents his unique interpretation of Goethe's classic, Faust. This film completes his "Tetralogy of Power" following Moloch (Hitler), Taurus (Lenin), and The Sun (Emperor Hirohito). Faust explores the corrupting influence of power through the tale of a knowledge-seeking professor driven by greed and lust. Faust, played by Johannes Zeiler, dissects corpses in his quest to understand life’s meaning. His fateful encounter with Margarete (Isolda Dychauk) leads him to sell his soul to a grotesque Mephistopheles figure (Anton Adasinsky) to pursue love and desire. Through Sokurov’s masterful visuals and sound design, the film reimagines the myth in a thought-provoking and immersive manner.
