The chattering R&B guitar, funky bass, and angular keyboard vamps that accompany the spiritual exhortations of the opening track "Come Into His Presence" make it clear from the start that FAITH IN THE HOUSE is a meeting of earnest praise-and-worship lyrics with infectious, groove-based music designed to make you sway while testifying. As led by Bishop Andrew Merritt, the eminently energetic Straight Gate Mass Choir invest so much vigor in their singing that the line between getting religion and getting down is often deliciously blurred. Old-school gospel hardliners might take issue with such an approach, but that's probably just fine with Bishop Merritt, a man who appears to have a very musical mission.
