Overview

"Erik the Viking" is a 1989 British comedy-fantasy film written and directed by Terry Jones, inspired by his children's book "The Saga of Erik the Viking" (1983). However, the film's plot diverges significantly from the book. In a notable performance, Jones appears as King Arnulf.

The story is steeped in Norse mythology. It begins with Erik (Tim Robbins), a young Viking who realizes he has no taste for the traditional Viking lifestyle of rape and pillage, feeling guilt over the death of an innocent woman, Helga (Samantha Bond).

Learning from the wise woman Freya (Eartha Kitt) that Fenrir the wolf has swallowed the sun, plunging the world into the age of Ragnarök, Erik resolves to travel to Asgard to petition the gods to end Ragnarök. Freya informs him that he must find the Horn Resounding in the mystical land of Hy-Brasil. Each note blown on the Horn serves a different purpose: the first will take Erik and his crew to Asgard, the second will awaken the gods, and the third will bring them home. Erik embarks on this quest with a diverse crew from his village, including Harald (Freddie Jones), a Christian missionary who is skeptical of their mission.
