This book opens up the rich heritage of Christian poetry over a span of 1300 years. It includes both favorites and poems that will come fresh to many. As an appetizer, it invites further reading.
The first poem in the book was composed by Caedmon, a herdsman in the seventh century. The selection includes many
time-honored names- John Donne, George Herbert, Ben Jonson, Milton, Bunyan, Blake, Emily Dickinson-
through to T. S. Eliot, C. S. Lewis, Sir John Betjeman and other
well-known modern poets. Also included are some whose work deserves to be better known than it is.
The choice is concentrated mainly on short poems that communicate well to modern readers. Each poet is introduced with a brief "life", which adds a personal dimension. Illustrations from the different periods, echoing the subjects, add to the enjoyment of the book.
