Overview
This CD presents two of Dmitri Shostakovich's final string quartets, Nos. 14 and 15, both composed in the early 1970s, during the later years of his life. These works display a deep emotional intensity and the personal reflections of the composer as he faced his own mortality. String Quartet No. 14 in F-Sharp Major (Op. 142) and String Quartet No. 15 in E-Flat Minor (Op. 144) continue the emotional and technical complexity found in Shostakovich’s earlier quartets, but with a more somber and introspective tone. The Borodin Quartet delivers an emotionally charged and technically impeccable performance that captures the essence of Shostakovich's late style.
