The great Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky hails from Siberia, and his Russian heritage has remained vital to his artistic personality ever since his international career was launched with his spectacular win at the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1989. Though he has acquired an extensive and wide-ranging repertory appropriate to one of the world s leading baritones, Russian music of all types has continued to occupy a central position in his music-making. His performances of Russian works in the world s leading opera houses have helped to make better known some of the greatest works of the literature many of them still rarely performed outside his native country. Russian song whether popular or classical has also remained a continuing passion for this most communicative of vocal artists, whose interpretations of concert works such as Mussorgsky s Songs and Dances of Death also demonstrate the intensely dramatic quality he is able to bring to all of his performances, whether on stage, in recital or in a large arena. Accompanied by the leading Russian conductor of our day, and with the orchestra of Russia s greatest opera company, Hvorostovsky here sings the music of his native land with authentic Russian passion.
Since his international career began with his victory in the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1989, the Siberian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has continued to impress audiences in the world s leading opera houses, singing a wide repertory that has included many of the best-known Russian operas, as well as less familiar examples. One of Russia s leading nineteenth-century composers, Tchaikovsky has provided Hvorostovsky with several major operatic roles, of which his interpretations of the title-role in Eugene Onegin and that of Prince Yeletsky in The Queen of Spades are justly famous; but Hvorostovsky has also explored some of Tchaikovsky s less well-known scores. Tchaikovsky s great Italian contemporary Giuseppe Verdi has been equally prominent in his stage repertoire, with outstanding success attending his performances as Giorgio Germont in La traviata, the Conte di Luna in Il trovatore and Renato in Un ballo in maschera, among others. As he brings together some of the finest arias from operas by these two giant figures of the Romantic era, Hvorostovsky s mixing of music from East and West emphasises the international breadth of his career as well as his expressive power as one of the great operatic artists of our time.
Ever since his spectacular success in the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1989, the Russian baritone Dmitrij Hvorostovskij has been at the forefront of the world s leading vocal artists, performing regularly at all the leading opera houses in a wide range of roles. Throughout his career his Russian identity has remained essential to him, not only in terms of what he sings, but also in the way he sings it with a characteristically authentic and unstinting Russian passion, based on his handsome, substantial and rock-solid baritone. Russian operatic roles continue to be central to his repertoire, as are also Russian songs both classical and popular, and from various periods in the country s long history. This selection of material from the lighter Russian repertory includes many titles that everyone in Hvorostovsky s homeland will know and love, but which other listeners from outside the country will instantly recognise even if the title is unknown to them. Whether the song is nostalgic such as Jamsh ik , or amorous, such as Karabejniky , or seductive, such as the smouldering Ochi chornyje (Dark Eyes), the magic of these evocative folk melodies finds in Hvorostovsky an ideal interpreter.
