English Summary:

Into Great Silence (German: Die große Stille) is a documentary film directed by Philip Gröning that was released in 2005. It is an intimate portrayal of the everyday lives of Catholic Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse, a monastery high in the French Alps (Chartreuse Mountains). 

The idea for the film was proposed to the monks in 1984, but the Carthusians said they wanted time to think about it. They responded to Gröning 16 years later to say they were willing to permit him to shoot the movie if he was still interested. Gröning then came alone to live at the monastery, where no visitors were ordinarily allowed, for a total of six months in 2002 and 2003. He filmed and recorded on his own, using no artificial light.

Gröning then spent two and a half years editing the film. The final cut contains neither spoken commentary nor added sound effects. It consists of images and sounds that depict the rhythm of monastic life, with occasional intertitles displaying selections from Holy Scripture.

Le Grand Silence (Die große Stille) est un film documentaire franco-helvéto-allemand réalisé par Philip Gröning sur les moines de la Grande Chartreuse, sorti en 2005.

Les scènes de la prise d'habit des novices sont les seules qui présentent une certaine cohérence narrative. En dehors d'elles, le montage mêle, sans ordre précis ni éléments qui permettent de les identifier, tantôt des scènes de la vie solitaire des pères chartreux, tantôt des séquences de la vie des frères, tantôt des vues de la vie communautaire, pris de moments différents de l'année et de la journée, et montés sans respecter leur ordre naturel.

La mise en évidence de certains plans de la vie de cellule, davantage « jouée », focalisent l'attention sur les choix personnels des moines filmés, novices ou jeunes profès, qui ne sont pas nécessairement représentatifs et dont certains ont quitté l'ordre moins de deux ans après le tournage. D'après les bonus du DVD, plusieurs moines plus expérimentés ont refusé d'être filmés.

The Carthusian Order (Latin: Ordo Cartusiensis), also called the Order of Saint Bruno, is a Catholic religious order of enclosed monastics. The order was founded by Bruno of Cologne in 1084 and includes both monks and nuns. The order has its own Rule, called the Statutes, rather than the Rule of Saint Benedict, and combines eremitical and cenobitic monasticism. The motto of the Carthusians is Stat crux dum volvitur orbis, Latin for "The Cross is steady while the world is turning."

Grande Chartreuse (French: [ɡʁɑ̃d ʃaʁtʁøz]) is the head monastery of the Carthusian religious order. It is located in the Chartreuse Mountains, north of the city of Grenoble, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (Isère), France.
