Description:

In 1995 verscheen een geheel herziene editie van de Willibrordvertaling, de door rooms-katholieken in Nederland en Vlaanderen meest gebruikte bijbelversie die oorspronkelijk in de jaren zestig tot stand was gekomen. In de grondtekst gelijkluidende passages werden daarbij meer op elkaar afgestemd en de vertaling werd aangepast aan het hedendaagse spraakgebruik. De inleidingen en aantekeningen werden herschreven en vernieuwd; tevens werd een uitgebreid verwijzingsapparaat aangebracht. In deze pocketeditie (in nieuwe spelling), bedoeld voor ruime verspreiding, zijn echter de aantekeningen en verwijzingen achterwege gebleven. Wel is een aantal bijlagen opgenomen: een overzicht van verschillende bijbelcanons en van maten, gewichten en munten; tenslotte enkele zwart-witte kaartjes en een alfabetische inhoudsopgave. In de tekst is het proza in twee kolommen gezet; poëzie in één kolom met vrije regelval. Gedrukt op dun, wit papier in een zeer kleine letter; omslag met religieuze voorstelling in kleur. 

The Willibrord translation is a Dutch Bible translation published by the Catholic Bible Foundation (KBS) in collaboration with the Flemish Bible Foundation (VBS). It was commissioned by the Catholic Church to replace the Petrus Canisius translation. She takes her name from H. Willibrord (ca. 658-739), missionary of the Low Countries and patron saint of the Dutch Church Province. The New Testament is the first to be translated, from the original Greek text. The Willibrord Translation also contains the entire Old Testament, translated directly from the original Hebrew text. The books of the Bible are in the order that is customary within the Roman Catholic tradition. The Deuterocanonical books are therefore incorporated between the books of the Old Testament. The Deuterocanonical books, which the Protestants call Apocrypha, are translated from the Greek original (Septuaginta). This is the original text for these books. Also for the only book of which a considerable part (2/3) of the Hebrew original is available, The Wisdom of Jesus Sirach, it is only used for the reconstruction of the text in case of errors in the Greek manuscripts.
