The former commanding officer, Commander Powell, was killed during hyperdrive due to an electrical short circuit and remains aboard in cryogenic suspension.

To cope with their boredom, the crew creates distractions. Doolittle builds a musical bottle organ, Talby spends time in the observation dome, and Boiler obsessively trims his moustache and engages in target practice with the ship's emergency laser rifle.
