This is not a book of answers. It is partly a book of problems and partly a blotted copybook; Christianity, then it is because the writer is conscious of failure at this point in his own life. In the old fairy-tale the king's magic suit was visible only to those who knew it was supposed to be there. It is because our putting on of the 'new man' is sometimes scarcely discernible to the outside observer that this book was requested by Christian student leaders. Young converts may be orthodox in doctrine and eager to win others, may talk the same peculiar jargon and show some of the same behaviourisms as their elders; yet at the same time they often fail to show in a positive and attractive way the courtesy and winsomeness to be expected of a Christian. Their lives are too little different from those of the unbelievers around them.

I am acutely conscious of my own debt to those who both by practice and precept have shown me something of all that 'adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour' ought to mean. Many of the ideas that now seem part of my own thinking I owe, under God, to faithful teachers and friends. Especial thanks are due to Mr Nigel Sylvester for all his suggestions and criticisms, and to Mr Robert Ewan, Mr Leith Samuel and the Rev. Alan Stibbs for many stimulating ideas.
