Overview

"Cobra Verde" is a 1987 German historical drama film directed by Werner Herzog, marking the fifth and final collaboration between Herzog and actor Klaus Kinski. The film is based on Bruce Chatwin's novel The Viceroy of Ouidah and tells the story of a fictional slave trader in 19th-century West Africa.

The narrative follows Francisco Manoel da Silva (Klaus Kinski), a debauched Brazilian rancher who, after his ranch is ruined by drought, reluctantly takes a job at a gold mining company. When he realizes he is being exploited, he murders his boss and becomes an outlaw known as Cobra Verde (Green Snake), a notorious bandit in the sertão.

During his escapades, da Silva encounters a wealthy sugar baron, Dom Octávio Coutinho (José Lewgoy), who hires him to manage slaves on his plantation.
