Overview
Claudio Monteverdi's "IL RITORNO D'ULISSE IN PATRIA" is a masterpiece of early Baroque opera, based on the epic poem "Odyssey" by Homer. This production was recorded at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1973 and features an all-star cast including Benjamin Luxon as Ulisse, Janet Baker as Penelope, and the Glyndebourne Chorus and London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Raymond Leppard.
The opera tells the story of the Greek hero Ulysses (Ulisse) and his long-awaited return to his homeland of Ithaca after the Trojan War. Disguised as a beggar, Ulisse must overcome various obstacles and challenges to reclaim his throne and reunite with his faithful wife Penelope.
Stage direction by Peter Hall and design by John Bury bring the ancient Greek myth to life on stage, while lighting by Hedley Versey and Robert Bryan and television direction by David Heather capture the drama and emotion of the performance for the screen.
