The three Puritan Divines who had oversight of the publication of this worthy work in 1660 [Simeon Ashe, Edmund Calamy, and William Taylor] felt a deep sense of loss when Ralph Robinson died at an early age. In the preface they wrote, Oh how great was London's loss by the death of worthy Master Robinson, taken away in his youth, when growing towards greater matu- rity for the further service of the Church of Christ.

Even a cursory reading of this book will reveal the heart of someone who so revered Christ as to find his all in all in Him. Each chapter examines a Scripture metaphor which reveals Christ to be all that the Christian needs. The sufficiency of Christ is being questioned today as more and more people think that they can perfect in the flesh what God has begun in the Spirit. Once again, a great preacher from the past calls us back to rational thinking as he proclaims what true believers have inevitably found: CHRIST IS ALL AND IN ALL.

The editors closed their preface with these remarks, which alone should make this book must reading for Christians:

This field is full of gospel treasures digged out of Scripture mines, for thine enriching in the knowledge of Christ; and what knowledge is so necessary, excellent, or profitable? For from hence do issue all things which pertain unto life and godliness, 2 Peter 1:3. Hereby our love to Christ is enflamed, our longings after him enlarged, our faith in him confirmed, our joys in him raised; yea, by the knowledge of him he is possessed and improved, both for growth in all graces, augmenting of all spiritual comforts, and preparation for everlasting glory.

Ralph Robinson (1614-1655)
Ralph Robinson, Puritan Divine, was born at Heswall, Cheshire, in June 1614. He was educated at St. Catharine Hall in Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1638, and M.A. in 1642. On the strength of his preaching, he was in- vited to St. Mary's Wolnoth, Lombard Street, and there received Presbyterian ordination about 1642.
He was scribe to the first assembly of provincial ministers held in London in 1647, and united with them in the pro- test against the king's death in 1649. On June 11, 1651, he was arrested on a charge of conspiracy with Christopher Love, Thomas Watson, and William Jenkyn. While Love was beheaded, the others were either pardoned or not charged. Robinson promised submis- sion to the existing government in the future and was released.
He was a person of exemplary piety. He was an indefatigable, orthodox, and useful preacher; a loving husband, a tender father, a vigilant pastor, a cheer- ful companion, and a faithful friend. He once said to an intimate friend that he loved fasting and prayer with all his heart. Robinson died on June 15, 1655.
