Review:
Born Christopher John Davison in Argentina on 15 October 1948 to British diplomat Colonel Charles Davison and his Irish-born wife Maeve Emily de Burgh, Chris de Burgh was one pop-rock singer of note in the 1980s who, out of family considerations, chose to primarily confine his career to Europe, with occasional visits to other parts of the world (where he was hugely popular) rather than pursue the fame that might have come his way had he chosen the U.S. as a base.
Consequently, with his releases handled through A&M Records and few public appearances to promote them, his North American hits were confined to just seven over a 5-year span, nor did his many albums do all that well over here from a commercial standpoint. His first charter here was 1983's Don't Pay The Ferryman, which peaked at # 34 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in May b/w All The Love I Have Inside on A&M 2511. A few months later in September the best he could do with Ship To Shore was a weak # 71 on A&M 2565 b/w The Getaway.
His next didn't come until almost a year later when High On Emotion just missed the Top 40, settling for a # 44 in July/August 1984 on A&M 2643 b/w Much More Than This. It would then be well over two years before his next North American hit, but it was a great one as Lady In Red soared to # 2 Adult Contemporary (AC) and # 3 Hot 100 March/April 1987 on A&M 2848 b/w The Vision. After that, however, he would only make the AC charts, starting with Fatal hesitation, a # 20 AC in August 1987 on A&M 2942 b/w The Ballroom Of Romance, followed by the August 1988 # 36 AC Love Is My Decision on A&M 1220 b/w The Simple truth (A Child Is Born), and the # 38 AC Missing You in December 1988 on A&M 1254 b/w The Last Time I Cried.
That this 1981 album (A&M SP 9059) is regarded as the vehicle for his best singles from his first five LPs, none of which made any North American charts, graphically underscores the fact that his most devoted audiences were in other parts of the world. Even so, you will be enthralled with the spectral tones of Spanish Train, or the epic stories delivered in A Spaceman Came Travelling and Crusader.
