The game of Western Mahjong demystified and made easy.

You know the scene from Crazy Rich Asians? While, I can't promise that, what I can promise is a game that you will love, that comes heaped with tradition but easy to digest. From beginners and upwards, players of all levels will enjoy this refreshing and enlivening instruction on the game.

STYLES OF MAHJONG

The game of Mahjong was first conceived in 19th century China. The game has evolved to produce many variations, which can be found all over the globe.

There are some distinct differences between the Asian and Western styles of the game. Then, further differences lie within these styles, usually dictated by the region you're playing in. For example, Singapore and Malaysia, neighbouring countries, play different variations of the game.

In this book, we'll be focussing on the Western style. The best way to pick up Asian style would be to track down a group who play and invite yourself along. Know that it's a faster paced game, there are a few set hands but it's mainly "freestyle', points are important and the stakes can be high!

The style we'll be playing does not involve points, with the emphasis on enjoying the game. I've used levels, so you can work out the difficulty of each hand and remember to have fun along the way

About the Author

NATASHA PEART

Natasha is a copywriter by trade and her work has been featured across a wide range of media from television ads to recipe books, radio segments to billboards. You name it, she's probably written it. Growing up in Ireland, where she completed her MSc in Advertising, Natasha went on to work for big name advertising agencies before emigrating to Sydney, Australia.

After working in Sydney for many years and gaining both the passport and a husband, Singapore beckoned. This is where her love of Mahjong began.

Natasha currently lives in Singapore with her husband Don and three wonderful dogs. Truffles, Bronte and Jasmine. Apparently, they are beautiful players.

Special mention goes to Patricia A. Thomson & Betty Maloney (1997); The Mahjong Player's Companion. Some hands appearing in this book can also be found in The Mahjong Player's Companion. Some hands are based on hands found in The Mahjong Player's Companion.
