The Ola Hanson Story

Ola Hanson, inspired by his Christian faith from a young age, dedicated his life to missionary work. After his ordination in 1890, he and his wife were sent to the Kachin people in Upper Burma, despite significant challenges. The Kachins, initially described as difficult to convert, had an oral tradition rich with myths and legends, including a story about a lost book that they believed had been given to them by God.

Hanson’s mission was to restore this "lost book" to the Kachins by translating the Bible into their language. His extensive work included developing a written language for the Kachins, compiling a comprehensive vocabulary list, and producing various educational materials.

By June 28, 1911, Hanson completed the New Testament translation and continued with the Old Testament, finishing it on August 11, 1926. His efforts also included translating hymns and composing new ones, as well as producing educational resources for the Kachin people.

Hanson's legacy is deeply respected, and today there are an estimated 400,000–500,000 Kachin Christians, with 300,000 identifying as Baptists. His contributions have left a lasting impact on the Kachin church and community.
