Overview

Directed by Simon Broughton, "Breaking the Silence: Music in Afghanistan" is a powerful documentary that explores the reconnection of Afghanistan with its musical culture after the Taliban's prohibition of music. Shot in Kabul and Peshawar (Pakistan) just two months after the fall of the Taliban, this film introduces viewers to the music of Afghanistan and the way it has been impacted by conflicting regimes over the past 25 years.

The film features musicians in Kabul who are rebuilding the country's devastated musical life, including sarinda-player Mashinai, singer Aziz Ghaznawi, and female singer Naghma. It also offers rare footage of Sufi gatherings where Islam and music fervently meet and showcases Ensemble Kaboul, the best of the traditional Afghan groups in exile.
