Praying is having a conversation with God. Jesus Christ teaches us that we should regard God as our Father, and speak to him with the same intimacy that we talk to our natural parents. And other religions have discovered this same closeness to God. Of course in human terms it is a one-way conversation, since God rarely, if ever answers our prayers in words. But people in all ages have sensed that God listens, and that he replies through intimations and events.
There is no special art or skill to prayer. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray he gave them a series of phrases, that we now call the Lord's Prayer - which simply express the various attitudes and emotions that can prompt prayer: praise, gratitude, petitions, repentance. And on numerous occasions he told them to turn to God at any moment of the day, for every need.
