Who are the Lubukusu? 

The Lubukusu (Bukusu) people number around 565 000, living mainly in western Kenya. The first language literacy rate is 1 to 5 per cent, while the second language literacy rate is 25 to 50 per cent. The Lubukusu New Testament was launched in 1993. (source: Ethnologue)

Lubukusu Bible Received With Great Joy!

All roads led to Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma, western Kenya, in late May for the launch of the Lubukusu Bible. The size of the crowd that gathered was a clear symbol of the excitement and joy in the hearts of Lubukusu speakers. A promotional campaign on local radio by the translators and some of the reviewers of the Lubukusu Bible had also helped to swell the numbers. 

Begun in 1976, the Lubukusu translation project took over 30 years to reach completion, an event awaited very eagerly by the Lubukusu people. Their language is one of the 19 different dialects of the greater Abaluhya community. The Bible has been translated into only two other dialects so far, but two more dialects will have Bibles within the next few years, bringing the total to five. 

His Grace the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Dr Eliud Wabukala, a Lubukusu himself, was the guest speaker at the launch. He talked passionately about the role of the Bible in the Church and in his own community. Also attending was the Mayor of Bungoma, who represented the chief guest, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Moses Wetangula. 

Joyful sounds 

The ceremony begun with a procession from the outskirts of Bungoma to the stadium. Colourfully dressed local people were led by bicycles and motorcycles sounding their horns and making joyful sounds. Many others, their attention caught by the noise, also trooped into the stadium to join the celebrations. 

Isaac Litali, Bible Society of Kenya board chairman, gave a welcoming address and talked about the role of the Bible Society and how it cooperates with various communities to translate the Bible. General Secretary Elizabeth Muriuki then spoke on the progress of translation work in Kenya and the mission and vision of the Bible Society. Translation Consultant Dr Aloo Mojola gave a detailed history of the Lubukusu translation project and Translation Coordinator Dr Margaret Muthwii spoke on the role of translators, reviewers, manuscript examiners, keyboarders and the United Bible Societies in the making of a Bible.

Buying their own Bible 

Dr Muthwii then presented a copy of the Lubukusu Bible to the General Secretary, who in turn handed it to local Church leaders, symbolically passing it from the Bible Society to the Church, the user of the Bible. Encouraged by choirs and musicians, many people stood up and danced, especially when Gospel artist Ibrahim Mukatia performed. As the event came to an end, there was a surge of people wanting to buy their own Bible, evidence of their great joy at finally having God’s Word in their own language. Sales have also been strong ever since the launch.
