When we take up a study of the incarnation, it is surprising to read in the writings of a man whose Daily Bible Studies have been so widely received that the Virgin Birth is a doctrine which presents us with many difficulties, and it is a doctrine which our Church does not compel us to accept in the literal and the physical sense (1,10).

If the conception of Jesus was purely physical and strictly according to nature, then we may well question the validity of Old Testament prophecy, and ask, Who died on the cross? If the answer is a mere man, then we have no salvation. However, if it was the Son of God, then a miraculous conception is a logical necessity and everything pertaining to His life and ministry is of the utmost importance to us.

One Bible scholar who has expounded chapter 1 of Luke's Gospel with clarity and insight is Henry Parry Liddon (1829-1890), a graduate of Oxford University (B.D., and D.D., 1870), and for many years Ireland Professor of Exegesis in that institution. Well known for his outstanding Explanatory Analysis of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans and famous Bampton Lectures on the Divinity of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Professor Liddon's sermonic treatment of Dr. Luke's record of the events surrounding the birth of the Christ-child remains one of the most stimulating and satisfactory studies ever written.

With deftness and skill, Liddon describes the events leading up to "God being in Christ in order to reconcile the world to Himself." With equal dexterity he links Scripture with Scripture to show how momentous was the event that took place in a stable in Bethlehem. With eloquence and true reverence he leads the believing reader to worship Him "by Whom are all things, and we by Him."

These messages are delightful in their simplicity, yet profound in their handling of the praises and predictions recorded by Luke in his Gospel. It is a joy to see this work being made available to believers at this time.
