Proiectul NTR a început la scurt timp după Revoluția Română din 1989, fiind impulsionat de nevoia unei traduceri biblice contemporane care să rezoneze cu generația tânără. Just a few years after the fall of the communist regime in Romania following the Revolution of 1989, the International Bible Society (now Biblica) got involved in the Romanian context and began collaborating with professors and students of pastoral theology from the Emanuel Biblical Institute in Oradea (currently Emanuel University) in order to create a new translation of the Bible in Romanian. The idea of offering evangelical churches a Bible translated directly from Hebrew and Aramaic (Old Testament), respectively Greek (New Testament), took shape and materialized in a large-scale project called the New Romanian Translation. The need for a new translation, presented in a current language, after a period in which the Cornilescu version had been used in the neo-Protestant environment for almost a century, was felt especially among the younger generation, whose desire ended up being shared and gradually supported by the elderly generation. In 1921, Dumitru Cornilescu succeeded in a translation that would leave an indelible mark on the Romanian evangelical soul for the next 100 years, thus generating a deep emotional attachment in the hearts of believers. The Cornilescu version not only added new words to the private lexicon of many people, but was the reason that made literacy possible for many others. Children and elders, engineers and housewives, parliamentarians, students and academics - generations and generations of people - knew for sure that they were hearing and reading the Word of God. But the changes that occurred in the Romanian language throughout the last century, as well as the new archaeological discoveries that shed new light on many biblical words or expressions, were important enough to refresh and impose a new translation of the Bible in the Romanian language, a translation that adapts the lexicon, the syntax and the language to the characteristic forms of expression of the 21st century, but at the same time preserves the specificity of the sacred text and does not sacrifice fidelity to the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. The International Bible Society decided to invest time and effort in the New Romanian Translation project, involving over the years numerous theologians and philologists who would contribute to the creation of a more accurate translation than the one currently used and at the same time more relevant to the current generation.

Thus, after a decade of intense work on the translation of the Masoretic Text and the Greek text, the first edition of the NTR would see the light of day in 2007. Aware of the impact that a new translation can have in Romanian society, but especially in the neo-Protestant environment, the editorial committee considered it necessary to launch the first edition as a pilot version, later taking on the reactions, opinions and suggestions of other pastors, biblical scholars, theologians or university professors from all over the country. Considering the translation itself to be an ongoing process, where the opinions of those who are consulted are of great importance, the project coordinator continued to revise the first edition of the NTR in accordance with the suggestions received and to bring new theologians and philologists to the revision team to contribute to verify and improve the translation.

The printing of the second edition of the NTR in 2014, whose text included changes made between 2007-2010, was a new step towards achieving the main goal of the project initiators. The revision process consisted both in eliminating major spelling mistakes and in rectifying the translation of certain passages that could be rendered in a more coherent language. The text has been updated in accordance with the numerous constructive criticisms coming from pastors or university professors from the evangelical theological environment, following, in particular, well-grounded exegetical opinions.

The period between 2010-2016 was marked by another important event in the history of Biblica's involvement in Romanian society. In parallel with the decision to continue supporting the rigorous revision process of the NTR, Biblica initiated the project of translating Bible study notes from the English version known as the NIV Study Bible
