English Summary:

Battlefield is an American documentary series that debuted in 1994 on PBS that explores the most important battles fought primarily during the Second World War and the Vietnam War. The series employs a novel approach in which history is described by detailed accounts of major battles together with background and contextual information. The sixth and final series of the program was broadcast in 2002.

The series provides a comprehensive narrative of the war; in addition to traditional tactical details, subjects such as personalities and motivations of the leaders, technological developments, management of war economies, strategic contributions of smaller battles, etc. are explored in terms of their contribution to particular turning points. The narrator (Tim Pigott-Smith) speaks throughout the series, seasons 1, 2, and 4, with no interviews of actual battle veterans. The show is entirely made up of archive footage and 3D graphics. Rare archive film, including rare colour footage specific to each battle is included.

Episodes consist of two hour (100 minute) programs. Each episode of Battlefield is divided into segments. A typical sequence is as follows:

The Battle of France, also known as the Fall of France, was the German invasion of France and the Low Countries during the Second World War. On 3 September 1939 France had declared war on Germany, following the German invasion of Poland. In early September 1939, France began the limited Saar Offensive. By mid-October, the French had withdrawn to their start lines. In six weeks from 10 May 1940, German forces defeated Allied forces by mobile operations, conquering France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, ending land operations on the Western Front until the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. Italy entered the war on 10 June 1940.

1940 májusára már pattanásig feszült helyzet állt elő a német támadók és a szembenálló szövetséges csapatok között. Az összecsapás ténye nem, csak időpontja volt kérdéses, mindkét hadvezető fél vezérkara számára. A német hadvezetés villámháborús terveket fontolgatott az új helyzethez igazítva, hiszen eddigi hódításai során ez a módszer vezette őket a diadalhoz. Ezt azonban a szövetségesek is tudták.

A franciaországi hadjárat (angolul: Battle of France, franciául: Battaille de France, németül: Westfeldzug azaz „nyugati hadjárat”) a második világháború során, 1940. május 10-én indult meg, amelyben a náci Németország lerohanta Franciaországot és kikényszerítette megadását. A német hadsereg emellett elfoglalta Belgiumot, Hollandiát és Luxemburgot is. A franciaországi hadjárat vetett véget a második világháború kitörését követően vívott furcsa háborúnak, amelyet a harccselekmények szinte teljes hiánya jellemzett a nyugati fronton.

A hadjáratot két nagyobb szakaszra lehet osztani: az első szakaszban („Fall Gelb”) a német páncélos ékek átkeltek az Ardennek hegységen és hátulról bekerítették a szövetséges főerőket, amelyek Franciaország északi részén és Belgiumban harcoltak. A harcok eredményeként a Brit Expedíciós Haderő a tengerpartra szorult vissza és a Dinamó hadművelet keretében több mint 300 000 brit, francia és más nemzetiségű katonát kellett kimenteni Dunkerque-ből.
