Overview
Battle Hymn, also known as By Faith I Fly, is a compelling 1957 Technicolor war film directed by Douglas Sirk. Starring Rock Hudson as Colonel Dean E. Hess, the film is based on the true story of a United States Air Force fighter pilot during the Korean War.
Set in the summer of 1950, shortly after the invasion of South Korea, Dean Hess finds himself in a moral quandary. After serving as a minister in Ohio for two years, he grapples with the overwhelming guilt from a tragic incident during World War II, where his actions resulted in the deaths of 37 children in an orphanage due to an accidental bombing. Determined to make amends, Hess volunteers to return to active duty, this time as an instructor pilot for the Republic of Korea Air Force, assuring his wife that he will not see combat.
