"An Evening in the Village" was originally composed in 1908 as No. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces and quickly became one of Bartók’s signature works—a favorite that he himself delighted in performing at recitals. In a notable American interview, Bartók described it as an original piece with themes of his own invention rendered in the style of Hungarian-Transylvanian folk music. The work features two contrasting themes: a parlando-rubato rhythm in the first theme and a dance-like, peasant flute imitative second theme. Later, in 1931, Bartók orchestrated the piece as No. 1 of Hungarian Sketches.
In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the composer’s death, the "Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students" series was launched in 2015.
