An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as No. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces and has become one of Béla Bartók’s most beloved works. The composer, who frequently played it in recitals, explained in an American interview that although its themes are of his own invention, they are in the style of Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. The piece features two distinct themes: the first with a parlando-rubato rhythm and the second resembling a dance, imitating the sound of a peasant flute. In 1931, Bartók orchestrated the work as No. 1 of Hungarian Sketches. Der Komponist, der das Stück häufig in Konzerten selbst spielte, erklärte in einem amerikanischen Interview, dass die Themen zwar eigenständig erfunden, jedoch im Stil der ungarisch-transsilvanischen Volksweisen gehalten sind.
