Balázs Árpád composed the first version of Rhapsody for Hungarian cimbalom and concert band in 2001. In 2021, encouraged by a Japanese marimba player, he reworked the solo part for marimba, greatly broadening the work’s performance possibilities. Following the one-movement structure established by Franz Liszt, the piece is built around a returning cimbalom (or marimba) solo that serves as the structural pillar before the coda. Divided into five sections, Rhapsody develops a Lydian tetrachord motif (G–A–B–C♯) in various characters, ranging from a simple, childlike song to a resolute ritual dance. Ultimately, Rhapsody is a passionately emotional, colorfully orchestrated lyric orchestral poem, destined for the repertoire of every concert band that strives for excellence.

Balázs Árpád (1937) 2001-ben alkotta meg a Rapszódiát* cimbalomszólós, első változatában, majd egy japán marimbajátékos biztatására 2021-ben dolgozta át a szólószólamot marimbára, így jelentősen bővítve a mű megszólaltatási lehetőségeit. A Rapszódia Liszt Ferenc által létrehozott egytételes szerkezetét követi, melynek pilléreként a cimbalom (vagy marimba) kezdeti szólója a kóda előtt visszatér. Az öt részre tagolódó kompozíció egy líd tetrachord-motívumot (G–A–H/Cisz) fejleszt ki különböző karakterekben, az egyszerű, gyermekdalra emlékeztető megszólalástól a konok rítustáncig feszítve a zene ívét. Összességében a Rapszódia szenvedélyesen érzelmes, színekben és karakterekben gazdag, lírai zenekari alkotás, melynek helye megérdemelt azon fúvószenekarok repertoárjában, akik igényes előadásra törekednek.
