A rajzfilmsorozatban nincs párbeszéd, nincs szöveg, hiszen a zene mesél a kockásfülű nyúl és társai kedves, szórakoztató kalandjairól. Balázs Árpád átdolgozta és továbbgondolta a jól ismert melódiákat, így jött létre ez a héttételes „mese-szimfónia”, amelyben – ellentétben Prokofjev Péter és a farkassal című művével – nincs narrátor, maguk a hangszerek a mesemondók. A zeneszerző ebben a művében is színesen és változatosan társítja egymással a hangszercsoportokat, ügyesen váltogatva a szólisztikus, kamarazenei és zenekari faktúrákat. A mű I., II., IV. és VII. tétele önállóan is előadható "kis szvita", mely négyperces időtartama és könnyebb játszhatósága miatt a szerényebb lehetőségekkel rendelkező együttesek számára is ideális.
