Seven year old Csore (Zsuzsi Czinkoczi) is an orphan, which proves not to be such a good thing in a country where the government pays adopting parents mucho bucks, many of the adults after the money rather than the kids. At first placed with a poor family that won't even clothe the girl, our young heroine experiences so much abuse that she has no choice but to run away. Income makes little difference, though, for when Csore next finds herself residing on a well-to-do farm, the unstable nature of her new "mother" creates just as much pain and suffering. A sad yet critically praised tale which unfortunately holds truth. Based on the novel by Zsigmond Moricz.
