Overview

Aрaм Хачатурян's Концерт для Скрипки с Оркестром (Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47) is a powerful and evocative work, celebrated as one of the most popular and enduring pieces in modern violin literature. Premiered in 1940, this concerto remains a staple for violinists worldwide, beloved for its dramatic energy and lyrical beauty. The performance on this album features the legendary David Oistrakh, who not only was the first to perform the concerto but also collaborated closely with Hачатурян to shape the violin writing.

The concerto consists of three movements:

  1. Allegro con fermezza – A bold opening filled with contrasting themes, featuring a powerful solo violin part that moves from vigorous energy to lyrical beauty.
  2. Andante sostenuto – A slow, dreamy movement with lush melodies that evoke images of a peaceful, slumbering nature, full of romantic longing.
  3. Allegro vivace – A lively, celebratory finale, with virtuosic display and joyful themes that evolve into a brilliant conclusion.

The performance is conducted by Hачатурян with the Great Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio, recorded in 1965 under the careful direction of sound engineer Alexander Grossman. This album captures the depth and elegance of Hачатурян’s composition, with David Oistrakh’s violin playing at its heart.
