Overview
This BAFTA award-winning epic, based on the novel by Anthony Trollope and adapted by Andrew Davies, tells the tale of a society in turmoil where money, power, and corruption are the order of the day. Set in the railway boom of the 1870s, the series contains all the elements that made Trollope the most popular novelist of his day, including the trials and tribulations of young love and the enduring values of honorable men.
Augustus Melmotte (David Suchet) arrives in London with his wife and daughter, appearing charming and noble. However, beneath the surface lies a deceitful financier. Melmotte wastes no time in charming an unwitting Paul Montague into investing in one of his schemes. As Melmotte climbs the society ladder, his web of deceit captures his own daughter Marie and suitor Felix Carbury, son of feckless novelist Lady Carbury.
