FORD LEWIS BATTLES (1915-1979) was one of the leading Calvin scholars of his day. He translated the definitive English edition of the Institutes, edited and translated selections of Calvin in The Piety of John Calvin, and wrote many seminal journal articles on the Reformation. He was professor of church history at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary from 1967 to 1978, when he became a visiting professor at Calvin Theological Seminary.
