Dubbed "elegance personified in song" by the Austria Press Agency, Alfredo Kraus (1927-1999) is remembered as one of the finest lyric tenors of his era. Although he sang regularly in Vienna from
1965 to 1993, Kraus's visits to Salzburg were far less frequent. After appearing in Don Giovanni during the 1969 Festival, Kraus did not return to Salzburg until 1990, when he performed the much-heralded recital presented on this disc. Even the Große Festspielhaus the large hall — normally reserved for grand opera and orchestral concerts - could not accommodate the demand for tickets, so (thanks to a substantial donation from private donors) a live broadcast of the concert was beamed to the square in front of Salzburg's cathedral, where scores of opera fans assembled to hear the beloved tenor. In addition, Austrian Television recorded the evening, preserving this priceless memento of Kraus's artistry for future generations. Massenet: Elegy; Open your blue eyes. Duparc: Invitation to travel Bizet: La Chanson du fou; Ouvre ton coeur Tosti: Secret; I want to love you; Torment; Dawn separates shadow from light.
