Overview
Alexander Glazunov's Raymonda is a ballet in three acts, with a libretto by Lydia Pashkova and Marius Petipa. This production features revised choreography by Yuri Grigorovich, based on the original choreography by Petipa and Aleksandr Gorsky. The Bolshoi Ballet performs the piece, with Natalya Bessmertnova as Raymonda, Yuri Vasyuchenko as Jean de Brienne, Gediminas Taranda as Abderakhman, and Elena Bobrov as Countess Sybille. The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra is conducted by Algis Zhuraitis.
The ballet tells the story of Raymonda, a young woman who is betrothed to Jean de Brienne, a knight who has gone to fight in the Crusades. When a Saracen knight, Abderakhman, sees Raymonda's portrait, he becomes infatuated with her and tries to win her over. Despite his efforts, Raymonda remains true to Jean de Brienne, and the ballet ends with their wedding.
